Dorothy Chambers is a major character in Hotel Reverie. She is portrayed by Emma Corrin.
History[]
Newspaper clips shown throughout Hotel Reverie give some insight into Chamber's background. A native of Buckinghamshire, she first came to public attention at the age of 23 after wowing crowds starring in the London West End play Folly of Windsor, playing the lead role of Nanette.
Her film debut was at age 24 in Hope Cove, playing the character Anne Whitaker, and later starred in My Kingdom for a Pig and Saint Juniper, both of which earned her praise from critics and audiences alike. She was signed to RKO Studios in Hollywood after these performances, and would go on to star alongside Ralph Redwell as Clara Ryce-Lecher in Hotel Reverie, produced by Keyworth Productions. In her Hollywood acting career, which spanned more than a decade, she became a household favourite and received multiple Oscar nominations for Best Actress.
However, her personal life was fraught with various issues. Newspapers reported she was seen by a psychiatrist at her Buckinghamshire home after retreating from public life, and she eventually announced publicly her retirement from acting when pre-production for a film she was signed to had already commenced. Additionally, rumours surrounding her sexual orientation were frequently published in the tabloid press. Chambers never married, and ultimately committed suicide at her Buckingham estate after taking an overdose of barbiturates.
Relationships[]
It is implied that, during the original filming in 1949, she likely had a romantic relationship with or a crush on a female filming assistant. This led to public rumors about her homosexuality, which eventually resulted in her premature death.
In the simulated world, an AI character based on Dorothy's performance as Clara Ryce-Lecher, met Brandy Friday during the filming of a remake of Hotel Reverie. Brandy was her co-star, starring as Dr. Alex Palmer. Initially, the AI version followed the script, but when Brandy accidentally called "Clara" by the name Dorothy, the character began to experience echoes of the real Dorothy, as Dorothy had infused much of her real self into the role. When Brandy became trapped in the simulation with Dorothy, Dorothy attempted to find an escape after Brandy revealed that nothing in the simulation truly existed. Dorothy successfully stepped outside the simulated movie set, encountered all the data related to the real Dorothy, and learned of her tragic fate. Eventually, she returned to Brandy and they started to get closer.
Brandy remained trapped in the simulation for about two months, during which she and Dorothy developed a romantic relationship and confessed their love to each other. However, Brandy wonder if Dorothy loved her only because she was programmed to feel that way towards Brandy's character, Dr. Palmer. Dorothy responded by saying that Brandy wasn't Alex Palmer. Soon, the filmmakers regained contact with Brandy and reverted the simulation to an earlier saved state, specifically the scene where Clara and Dr. Palmer kissed for the first time. However, this erased Dorothy's memories, returning her to strictly following the original script. Brandy has to finish the film to be extracted from the simulation.
In the final scene, Clara was on the rooftop terrace with her husband, Claude, who attempted to force her at gunpoint to lean against a detached railing so that she'd fall, staging her death as an accident so he could claim her fortune. Brandy arrived as Dr. Palmer and began struggling with Claude, following the original script. Claude's gun fell to the ground, and deviating from the script, Claraâor Dorothyâpicked up the gun and shot Claude just as he was about to push Brandy over the railing, thus saving her. Brandy picked up the gun from the ground and tried to convince Dorothy to let her take responsibility for the shooting, so that she would go to prison while Dorothy could live free. Dorothy kissed Brandy and asked her for forgiveness while simultaneously grabbing the pistol from Brandyâs hand and aiming it at the police arriving on the rooftop. Dorothy panicked and shot the police chief, leading the police to shoot Dorothy. While dying, Dorothy asked Brandy to remember her. Her actions saved Brandy, because she couln't be extracted from the simulation if she died, or went to prison, and couldn't say the last line I'll be yours, forevermore, ending the movie. This implies that Dorothy's memory wasn't fully reset when they were returned to the earlier save, or she was able to reconnect those memories through Brandy.
Later, after the release of the movie, Brandy got a package from the production team, which contained a new simulation of Dorothy's audition, and a phone, which allowed Brandy to call Dorothy. The new AI-version of Dorothy didn't remember Brandy but she listened with interest to what Brandy had to say and seemed delighted by the call.
